How do you stimulate reading?

My 9-year old son never reads. He has been diagnosed gifted when he was 4. He could already read at that age.

Later, when he had to read books for school, he started dreading reading, because it were all first readers books with little to no content.

Now, he never reads. He has a huge library, with Roald Dahl, Geronimo Stilton, Harry Potter, encyclopedias,... but he never touches them. I take him to the library ocassionely and he will lend some books, but never touches them afterwards.

I myself am addicted to books so he sees me reading all the time. I still read to him from time to time, and hope that that way he will be curious about the rest of the book but he sees right through me.

This no reading fase has been going on for 3 years now, will it ever pass?

(I am not a native speaker, please forgive me any mistakes in English, my maternal language is Dutch). How do you stimulate reading?
Continue to be a good example. Let him see you that you're reading and you're enjoying it. But don't push him to read. Don't even tell him to go and read. Instead, help him get interested with other things (music, sports, art). He'll pick up the books again, trust me.How do you stimulate reading?
find something he likes. I went through the same thing with my son. I found some dirtbike magazines and bought him a subscription. He doesn't have to only read books. Just figure out what he likes. How do you stimulate reading?
First of all, congratulations on your use of the English language. You are handling it beautifully.

About your son.....mine was the same way....he could read but wouldn't....UNTIL....

he became fascinated with cyber fantasy games and found a monthly magazine about them. He reads it cover-to-cover every month (and it is no small magazine).

He is in college now and HAS to read a lot of stuff that he would rather not, but he made the Dean's list last semester because he has learned that reading has its rewards.....your son will too. Keep offering him reading material that is a little ABOVE his normal reading level and on subjects that he just can't get enough of. Good luck.
English is my second language too. I started reading to my son when I brought him back from the hospital and continued to read to him bedtime stories till he was about 12. When he was 7, he got impatient with me reading only one chapter a night of Charles Dckens - A Chistmas Carol - and red it himself. At 10 he read Bulfinches Mythology, because he wanted to know more. He learned that books are a way to find out about things and to entertain himself. But we never had cable TV either and video gametime was rather limited for him. He is grown now and still an avid reader.
