I am a huge "Gone with the Wind" fan, but I would like to get some additional perspective about that fascinating sector of time and society...The male-female, slave-owner, single-married dynamics are so very different from our modren day ones, and I want to see if other authors have different takes on it than Margaret mitchell... I'd like something fictional....Can anyone recommend me some good books or movies about the Old American Pre-civil war South?John Jakes has a trilogy of books that begin before the Civil War and then continue during it and after it. They are really good stories. The first novel is called North and South, then comes Love and War and finally Heaven and Hell. Very interesting stories from both sides.
You may enjoy Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, too.
Jane Peart has a series called The Brides of Montclair which, though starting in the 1700s, has several books set both before and during the Civil War.
Eugenia Price has a series of books that begin before the Civil War...Savannah; To See Your Face Again; Before the Darkness Falls; Stranger in Savannah.
I hope that helps. Can anyone recommend me some good books or movies about the Old American Pre-civil war South? Two miniseries, 'North and South' and 'Beulah Land', are good. Can anyone recommend me some good books or movies about the Old American Pre-civil war South?i second "the confessions of nat turner" and "huck finn".
"kindred" by octavia butler is one of the best books about slavery i've ever read.
naturally you shouldn't miss "beloved" by toni morrison.
"absalom, absalom!" by william faulkner deals directly with the legacy of rape and incest on plantations.
there's also the recent pulitzer prize winner by edward p. jones, "the known world," about a black slave owner.
"47," a young adult science fiction novel by walter mosley is a terrific slave story.
and another young adult novel (which didn't seem very young adult to me) which is really fantastic is "the astonishing life of octavian nothing" by M.T. Anderson.
you should also try firsthand slave narratives, collected in the 18th and 19th centuries from slaves. you'll find a short listing here:

"The Confessions Of Nate Turner" by William Styron
A fictional account of the Virginia slave uprising as seen by the revolt leader. Not what you think it's about.
The Adventures of Huck Finn" This novel has fallen out of favor in recent years but Twain did live through this time period. Try to find the annotated version.
