is there a certain amount of times an American movie can be played on a German computer?Can German brand laptops play American movies? is there a catch?Well that depends. Question: When you switch between American and German movies on the German laptop, does it prompt you to switch regions? What operating system is on the German laptop, is it Windows? If Windows is installed on the German laptop, then chances are there is a limited amount of times you can switch between regions. With Windows it is usually around five times, however, when you do switch regions, you can play however many American movies you like on the laptop. Thing is, when you switch between American and German movies, you are prompted to switch the regions, and as I stated above, you have a certain amount of times you can switch. However, there is software out there that makes your PC region-free, that is, you can switch between regions however many times you want. One piece of software that I personally used while I was in Germany and still use since I have relocated to England is called DVD Region+CSS Free. The software is free. However, it may prompt you to register and pay for it. The software is free just so long as you do not register and pay for it. You can still use it even when it is nagging you.
*EDIT* I've added this comment after thinking about your question for a minute more. If you were talking hardware, the hardware shouldn't differ much from the hardware utilized in American computers. What matters is the software installed. Like I said, if the OS is Windows, then the operation of the German PC with Windows shouldn't differ much from an American PC with Windows installed. I say this knowing United States utilizes a different standard than Germany to encode DVDs, NTSC. Germany uses the PAL standard. So, on the other hand, if you were to play an American DVD on a German DVD player, it wouldn't work. With computers it shouldn't make much difference, both standards work.
Even in Germany, Windows is still the predominant operating system used.

yeah. you can watch american movies on german laptops. i mean, why wouldnt you? that's like not being able to read an american book in a german bookstore. not really, sorta, i guess. well, you know what i mean.Can German brand laptops play American movies? is there a catch?yes, German brand laptops can play genuine American movies but I'm inclined to think that explaining the process here would be difficult to follow, so I would suggest that you call the toll-free support hotline number of the manufacturer of your laptop so that their Phone Technical Support people would be able to walk you through the process, if not give you info on how you would be able to change the settings on your computer properly. They are trained professionals, so you don't have to worry about a thing. Explain to them the reason why you called and I'm sure they would be able to help you with this issue.Can German brand laptops play American movies? is there a catch?
Hey lostinsp....;
If your haveing trouble playing movies on a german laptop you may need to change the region on the dvd player. To do this, right click my computer, click manage, click device manager then click on cd\dvd then click properties and then in one of the tabs you can change the dvd to region 1 which is north american. You can only change regions 5 times so do not do it to often
