I went to watch a movie last night. And of course before the movie started they showed all of the trailers. They showed both Filipino and American movies. So it just got me wondering, what do you find more entertaining, American movies or Filipino movies? Obviously the Philippines doesn't have the technology to make a fair comparison. So it might not really be a fair comparison.
But for overall entertainment value which do you prefer?YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies?Syempre American movies hands down.
But I must admit that the Philippines beat them all when it came to the "tail wagging the dog" hostage drama shown in real time worldwide." I rest my case.YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies?
American movies are better by far. However Filipino movies do reach the intended audience. I remember watching this one Filipino movie about a young woman perhaps 18 or 19 that was getting married to an Australian. The whole movie correctly portrayed the drama that is caused by poverty that cause many Filipino women to marry older, not so appealing men. In this movie it showed her inner struggle as she painfully chose to marrry a man that she didn't want to marry. It also showed the struggle of her having to leave the man that she did love (a Filipino man her own age). This type of drama would be very appealing to an average Filipino viewer in part because it is such a common and real life story. But for entertainment value I definitely prefer American movies because American movies always offer hope and fantasy to unrealistic situations. They are also better directed and the actors are way better and more realistic. Also the story of the movie is much more interesting and more fun to follow in American movies.YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies?depends on the genre.. for action, definitely American. this is what Filipino movies are lacking these days.. comedy, I still like many of the Filipino comedies.
but overall, I'd say Filipino movies. I can just relate with them more but that's not all. American movies may be incredibly more entertaining. but looking beyond those visuals, I still find Filipino movies unique. There's just something more "classic" about them even with the latest movies today. The American movies on the other hand are just modern.
I find this to be on the same grounds with video gaming. Modern game consoles like the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii are visually stunning and innovative in their gameplay styles (the Wiimote for example). But the classic game consoles like the Playstation 1 and Family Computer are still the best. They're simply nostalgic and more original gameplay and storywise. It's as if the developers' creative ideas were blossoming that time.
to put it bluntly, Filipino movies in general cater specifically to a social class that has a shallow sense of enjoyment. you'll rarely find Filipinos who critique both American and Filipino movies because either we can't tell a good movie from a bad one... or we immediately stereotype Filipino movies as "corny" and inferior to American movies after seeing just the trailer.
for overall entertainment value between movies that don't need Avatar-ish technology, i still prefer American movies. all Filipino comedies have never been witty, most Filipino dramas are way too out-of-the-box, and don't get me started with Filipino action flicks. that doesn't mean every Filipino movie is that bad (do checkout the movie reviews of clickthecity.com's Phil Dy), it just means there are more American movies that are worth watching.YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies? For movies today, American. But as you said, it isn't a fair comparison.
For Philippine movies of the 60's and earlier, and selected films of the 70's and 80's, I recall watching reruns of local movies on TV. Except for the dumb Pinoy westerns (cowboy movies), the rest were pretty much at par with American films.YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies?
Same as the first post. For action, American movies are the way to go. For comedies, I love the old Filipino comedies! Some Tagalog dramas also have nice, complex plots, but I think that the older, more veteran actors are better than the "current" ones. Overall, I prefer American movies.
I agree the DELIVERANCE....oops....did that just come spewing out of my mouth....oh yes it did....but I still think he's right.
The production values of mainstream American are exponentially better than most Pinoy films. It means more thought and care was put into it--and that's the number one reason to like a movie.YAPPERS: Which do you prefer "American" or "Filipino" movies?
When it comes to x-rated films, American porno films are boring to watch compared to Filipino homemade pornos.. why? coz philippine x-films are funny.. if you listen to the words they used like..
i shoot mo na kaya ang tarahugo mo sa naglalawa kong kwebs.. hi hi hi funny di ba.
if it doesn't seem fair, why don't you just place filo movies against more comparable ones? (Bollywood movies w/ subtitles, hk/japanese/korean movies)
I'm sure many worldly YAP members would be able to relate
Honestly, I would prefer hollywood movies. I can't even remember the last Filipino movie I watched. And I am not entertained with Filipino horror movies because its quite cliche.
Most of the current Filipino actors are just 'pacute' they don't really know how to act. Sorry, but that is what I strongly think about this.
Io preferisco Americano.
I am a foreigner living in the PI and I love the old Tagalog comedies...
American movies.. sometimes i cant understand filipino movies. XD
AMERICAN MOVIES. Actually you simply cannot compare both of them. Filipino and American movies have a class of their own. I myself being a Filipino cannot even make a comparison of Filipino movies whether it is action/comedy or horror to that of American movies. It is like comparing Albert Einstein to that of a retarded boy. Einstein being American and the retarded boy being the Filipino.
JUST TAKE NOTICE OF THE TRAILERS itself of American movies. There you can already distinguish the quality of American movie making to that of Filipino films. In American movies, is like delicious food being shown in front of you and you already want to eat it while a Filipino trailers alone, you already knew the stories right from the start. You do not even have to be a genius to know what in store for a Filipino films. Let us take one case, the trailer of the film IN MY LIFE of Vilma Santos Recto, Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz. From the trailer alone you know both Luis and John Lloyd are working and living in the US and one of them is gay which is John Lloyd in this case and the mother went to the US to take good care of his son which is Luis who is dying of a cancer? I never seen or watch this movie, so pardon my mistake in accurately analyzing the story from the trailer itself. Let us take the case of an American film trailer, Walt Disney movie "PRINCE OF PERSIA". A formerly game console story that was brought to the screen. I have both seen the trailer and watch the movie. The only thing I can say about it is this....FANTASTIC really amazing indeed. The scope, cinematography, the computer effect is outstanding. I which I can say the same about Filipino movies but sad to say I CANNOT. One thing I notice, the more one watch Filipino movies one cannot elevate his or her mind, it is true it is from our own heritage and culture but is crying or making too much melodramatic a FILIPINO CULTURE TO YOU? OA naman ang ibang Filipino films, all they can offer is to make people cry which sometimes doesn't work well.
TAKE NOTE also of Asian movie making like Thai, Korean and Chinese movies esp. action one, these films from Thailand or China or Korean has more sense than what we have. That is why the Filipino movie industry has died long time ago, you never notice they hardly make action films anymore except love stories that already saturated our minds from telenobela to the big silver screen.
THAT IS WHY FOR OVER ALL ENTERTAINMENT AND VALUE OF TIME consumption I rather choose the American movie film industries from MGM, Paramount, TRI-Star films, Universal etc. which I do not think the outfit of Mother Lily STAR CINEMA or even Vic Del Rosario VIVA FILMS can match the income of any of the US film company I had mention.
