There are a few reservations where "4/4" Native Americans still exist. But compared to the overall population, they are relatively rare.



There are movies that show the common relationships between whites and Native Americans. The best one I can think of is "The Undefated" by John Wayne. It's common knowledge that most modern Cherokees are part white. This movie shows the reason. Intermarriage between whites and Cherokees was very common for hundreds of years. In the film, a Cherokee Scout for the US Army falls for a white southern belle, the daughter of a Confederate Colonel, shortly after the Civil War.



The movie was made in the style of a classic 1950s western with the typical music. John Wayne was often criticized as bigoted against Native Americans in his earlier films. But in this movie fro 1969 he made a radical departure and was actually ahead of his time in showing intermixed relationships between whites and Native Americans. He revealed the common historical pattern of Cherokees intermarrying with whites. This clip briefly shows the Cherokee guy and the southern woman while John Wayne is talking to Confederate soldiers. The southern woman, Charlotte, rejects Jan Michael Vincent's character, a young Confederate officer, and chooses the Cherokee guy instead.

I am registered as "4/4" on an Arizona Reservation. I left the reservation for an engineering job. It pays well, and I have been doing great. I miss the mountains of the southwest. So I take vacations back. That leads to a lot of training at the local gym, which is where I met my girlfriend. She is blonde and white and enjoys extreme cardio exercise like me. She genuinely reveres my mountain running and wants to visit the southwest with me. It's part of my Native American culture. The theme of that old John Wayne movie has perpetuated to our modern times.
