How are French movies different from American movies?

Other than the fact that they're in a different language. How are French movies different from American movies? Most French movies are about human relationships. How characters interact with each other in interesting situations.

Sometimes, the situation doesn't even have to be interesting like with "My dinner with Andre." Dialogue is very important. How people relate to each other is what French filmmakers like to explore. Characters are typically not black or white, there are only shades of grey. Most conflicts are resolved with discussion. French movies are often about expressing a point of view or an idea. Or shining light on a stereotype.

American filmmaker seem to be more interested in creating problem/solution types of films. There's always a bad guy and a good guy. The problems are often resolved with violence. Cowboy vs. Indians. Cops vs Robbers. Military vs. Terrorists. Humans vs aliens. Good verses Evil.

Hollywood films like to be glossy - vivid colors, amazing special effects, choreographed action scenes, cool music.

French movies don't mind being more documentary style - shaky camera, flawed audio, etc.

This is not to say France cannot make action films. "La Femme Nikita" was a good spy thriller. But unlike Bond, it wasn't about the stunts or the special effects. The film was more of a psychological profile of how much can a person take.

These are general differences - American independent films often take a French perspective - such as "Little Miss Sunshine" - so you can't say ALL movies are the same. But in general, you can say that Hollywood films are slicker and made on bigger budgets than French films. How are French movies different from American movies?i was going to say they are french but oh well no ideaHow are French movies different from American movies?amercian movies is all about making money so they will put special effect etc.. also it is big budget
